Pichwai Wall Plate by Master Artsian Kuldeepak Soni
SIZE: 11 inch (diameter)
MEDIUM: Natural Colours on Handmade plate
MAKING OF THE PLATE: The base plate is a cotton canvas pasted onto a moulded plate using tamarind paste. A mixture of chalk powder and multani mitti is applied, dried, and smoothened with stone for a polished canvas. To prevent insect damage we use crushed neem leaves. With multiple layers of coating, drying, and finishing, the complete plate-making process spans three full days.
NATURAL COLOURS: The deep blue background, derived from the indigo plant, sets a serene tone. Black, made from carbon lamp black, forms striking silhouettes. The central tree glows with gold accents using the delicate gold dust, enhancing its presence. The calf, painted using ground white chalk or limestone, stands out, bringing harmony to the composition.
Each color undergoes a meticulous elaborate process of sourcing natural materials, cleaning, crushing, mixing with water and adding adhesives.
Sacred Shelter
As the storm faded, the jungle stood quiet, washed clean by the rain. In the stillness, the great Kalpavriksha stood tall, its branches wide and strong, untouched by the night’s fury. Beneath it, a small golden calf wandered, weary from the storm.
Drawn to the tree’s shelter, it stepped onto the soft earth beneath its shade. The air was calm, the leaves whispering in the breeze. Here, under the tree’s vast embrace, the calf found comfort. The Kalpavriksha had stood through time, offering refuge without question, giving without asking.
Master artisan Kuldeepak Soni captures this moment beautifully, where nature’s wisdom and kindness shine in the quiet after the storm, a reminder of shelter and generosity. The Kalpavriksha is accentuated with a golden effect, its luminous branches radiating warmth and divinity, symbolizing its sacred presence and the boundless blessings it bestows upon all who seek its refuge.
