Shekhawati Wall Plate by Master ArtisanBhairunlal Swarankar and Nand Kishore Swarankar
SIZE: 7.5 inch (diameter)
MEDIUM: Natural Colours on Handmade plate

MAKING OF THE PLATE: The base plate is a cotton canvas pasted onto a moulded plate using tamarind paste. A mixture of chalk powder and multani mitti is applied, dried, and smoothened with stone for a polished canvas. To prevent insect damage we use crushed neem leaves. With multiple layers of coating, drying, and finishing, the complete plate-making process spans three full days.

NATURAL COLOURS: This plate is adorned with Malachite green, derived from copper carbonate hydroxide, bringing a vivid and rich foundation. The horse, painted in deep brown tones, is created using Geru (red ochre) and Hinglu (vermilion), sourced from iron oxide and cinnabar. The ornamentation in gold and red features Hartal (orpiment) gold-yellow and Haldi yellow, adding warmth, while intricate golden details use gold foil and gold dust to enhance its regal charm. The border, painted in Geru red, is accented with golden rings, followed by a final striking blue ring, achieved with Neel (indigo) and Lapis Lazuli. The horse’s deep Kaajal black, crafted from lamp soot, is highlighted with Safeda (lime white).

  • In Shekhawati’s royal courts, Sultan, the proud Marwari horse of the Maharajas, was a symbol of strength and loyalty. Dressed in gold and silk, he rode through battles and royal processions with power and grace. His story lived on through desert tales and palace artwork. President Awardee Bhairunlal Swarnkar blends Bikaner miniature and Shekhawati fresco styles to capture Sultan’s spirit on this plate. A tribute to Rajasthan’s royal legacy and the strong bond between horse and rider.
