Shekhawati Wall Plate by Master Artisan Bhairunlal Swarankar and Nand Kishore Swarankar
SIZE: 11 inch (diameter)
MEDIUM: Natural Colours on Handmade plate

MAKING OF THE PLATE: The base plate is a cotton canvas pasted onto a moulded plate using tamarind paste. A mixture of chalk powder and multani mitti is applied, dried, and smoothened with stone for a polished canvas. To prevent insect damage we use crushed neem leaves. With multiple layers of coating, drying, and finishing, the complete plate-making process spans three full days.

NATURAL COLOURS: This Shekhawati plate embodies the region’s artistic grandeur, painted with Malachite green as the base, symbolizing prosperity. The central motifs shine in Sona (gold) with accents of Hinglu (vermilion) and Geru (red ochre), adding depth. The geometric elements are highlighted in Safeda (lime white) and Neel (indigo), framed by a Geru border with gold rings.

  • In Jaipur’s royal courts, an artisan created a design inspired by geometric Islamic patterns, blending faith and art. At the center is an eight-petaled lotus symbolizing balance and unity. Golden vines on a deep green background add a touch of Mughal and Persian elegance mixed with Shekhawati’s style. The white petals stand for purity, and the blue center represents wisdom. Legend says that under moonlight, the patterns come alive, carrying the prayers of past artisans. Made by Nandkishore Swarnkar, son of President Awardee Bhairunlal Swarnkar, this plate honors Jaipur’s royal heritage.
