Shekhawati Wall Plate by Master ArtisanBhairunlal Swarankar and Nand Kishore Swarankar
SIZE: 11 inch (diameter)
MEDIUM: Natural Colours on Handmade plate
MAKING OF THE PLATE: The base plate is a cotton canvas pasted onto a moulded plate using tamarind paste. A mixture of chalk powder and multani mitti is applied, dried, and smoothened with stone for a polished canvas. To prevent insect damage we use crushed neem leaves. With multiple layers of coating, drying, and finishing, the complete plate-making process spans three full days.
NATURAL COLOURS: This Shekhawati wall plate features Neel (Indigo Blue) from the indigo plant in the background, blended with Safeda (Lime White) from calcium carbonate for the swirling clouds. The figure’s attire uses Geru (Red Ochre) from iron oxide and Haldi (Turmeric Yellow) from turmeric. Malachite Green from copper carbonate adorns the wings. The border features Hartal (Orpiment Yellow), while outlines use Kaajal (Lamp Black) from soot. The golden detailing likely combines Geru + Hartal. Each color undergoes a meticulous elaborate process of sourcing natural materials, cleaning, crushing, mixing with water and adding adhesives.
Meghpari
In the Shekhawati havelis, Meghpari, or angels of the clouds, grace the walls and ceilings with their ethereal presence. They dwell among the clouds, showering flowers as divine blessings. More than mere messengers, they are celestial musicians, weaving melodies that transform nature into a symphony.
President Awardee Bhairunlal Swarnkar illustrates Meghpari draped in Shekhawati’s vibrant artistry adorned in embroidered lehengas, flowing dupattas, and delicate ornaments that reflect the region’s rich heritage. The garland in her hand symbolizes a divine welcome, offering warmth to souls entering heaven. Their silent gestures and serene expressions speak beyond words.
